3 Home Remedies to Get Rid of Dark Underarms

Dark underarms or discoloration of underarms is a common problem faced often by women of almost every age group. I receive numerous requests to develop products to help reduce underarm pigmentation. However, this issue can be easily treated at home using some simple natural remedies.

Before we look at the remedies, I’m sharing some common causes for dark underarms:

Cause 1-Application of Artificial Deodorants and Antiperspirants

Few of the ingredients/chemicals present in artificial deodorants and antiperspirants react with the underarm skin and cause discoloration. You should opt for natural alternates like alum or our deodorant cream range.

Cause 2-Shaving

Shaving cuts off the hair from the surface of the skin leaving the root intact. This leads to a dark tinge under the skin. To prevent this, you should try out other options, like plucking or waxing to get rid of the complete hair root.

Cause 3-Formation of Dead Cells on the Skin

Darkening of armpits also is a result of dead cells trapped in between the creases of the skin. It is important to exfoliate underarms daily using a stiff brush or a loofah.

Cause 4- Medical issues like Acanthosis Nigricans / hormonal imbalances

Acanthosis Nigricans, hormonal issues or excessive weight also cause black or brown pigmentation on your neck and armpit areas. Losing weight and maintaining a good diet can help control it to an extent but it is always a good idea to consult a doctor.

Home Remedies to get rid of dark underarms

Remedy 1-Potato

Mild acidic property possessed by potatoes make them a perfect natural bleaching agent. Moreover, potato does not irritate the skin.

How to Use

  • You should cut a thin potato slice and rub it on the underarm area
  • Alternatively, you can grate a potato and apply its juice on the affected area. Let it dry for 15 minutes and finally, wash it off.
  • Frequency- 2-3 times a day

Remedy 2- Cucumber + Lemon

Like potato, cucumber also has natural bleaching properties to help in lightening of discoloured skin.

How to Apply

  • Grate and extract cucumber juice and mix it with lemon juice and a pinch of turmeric powder. You should apply this solution on the armpits and leave for half an hour.
  • Frequency: 2-3 times a day

Remedy 3 – Baking Soda

Baking soda (meetha soda / cooking soda) is an effective skin lightening agent as well as a scrub.

Please note baking soda is not the same as baking powder.

How to Apply

  • Make a thick paste of baking soda and water and apply onto the armpits and scrub in circular motion for 1-2 minutes. Leave the paste on for another 15-20 minutes. Rinse off with lukewarm water
  • Frequency – once a day

I hope you find these remedies useful.

Super Easy Foot Spa at Home

When was the last time you showed some love to your feet? We usually forget to take proper care of our feet unless we experience a problem. However, pampering your feet is very essential to keep them in good condition.

Why Foot Care is Important

  • Regular care of your feet helps early detection of fungal infections, bunions, corns and similar other signs at initial stage and hence, you can treat them before they start causing trouble
  • Cutting, clipping and cleaning of toenails avoid their inward growth and eliminates dirt as well as bacterial infections and bad odour
  • It also helps prevent dryness and cracking of heels.

Importance of Exfoliating Feet

Exfoliating your feet is a must – I do recommend doing it daily as it prevents formation of painful corns or bunions. It also encourages growth of new cells and keeps your feet smooth and helps get rid of sun tan.

Tip: Keep a hard bristle brush in the shower and scrub your feet for a few minutes every day.

A great way to take care of your feet is to do a mini foot spa at home. Most of us get caught up in our daily chores and do not get adequate time to step out for a spa or a pedicure. It is easy to fit in a do-it-yourself foot spa at home while binging on your favourite TV series. And let’s be honest, it’s also cheaper 😛

For a foot spa at home, you only require a few, easily available items like

  • Essential oil (optional)
  • Lukewarm water
  • A soap / shampoo
  • Cutter, nail filer, nail polish and nail polish remover
  • Pumice stone or foot scrub
  • Cuticle cream (optional)
  • A moisturizer
  • A foot scrub
  • A foot mask (optional)
  • A oil of your choice like almond, coconut, sunflower
  • A bucket
  • A towel

Now, let us look on different steps involved in foot spa or pedicure at home.

Trimming of Nails-

Start your foot spa by removing your nail polish and then, trimming your nails. You may soften nails by applying a cuticle cream and finally file your nails to get the required shape.

Soaking of Foot-

In order to perform foot spa at home, you only require few easily available equipments, which include-

  • Essential oil
  • Lukewarm water
  • Foot-wash
  • Cutter, nail filer, nail polish and nail polish remover
  • Pumice stone or foot scrub
  • Cuticle cream
  • Shea butter moisturizer
  • Banana sugar foot scrub

Procedure Involved in Home Foot Spa

Now, let us look on different steps involved in foot spa or pedicure at home.

Trimming of Nails-

You have to start with the foot spa by applying a nail polish remover to remove nail polish from the toenails and then, cutting it in the required manner. You may soften nails by applying a cuticle cream and finally file the nails to get the required shape.

Soaking of Foot-

Prepare your foot soak in the bucket by dissolving a small amount of soap / shampoo in lukewarm water along with some essential oils and an oil of your choice. You can also add some Epsom salt to relieve any aches or soreness. Soak your feet and relax for about 10 minutes. This helps in reduction of inflammation and pain largely. In addition, it is helpful in removing dirt and sweat.

Once your skin is soft, dry them out on the towel.

Exfoliation is the next step. To do this, you should use a brush or a pumice stone to scrub your heels, ankles and side areas of the heel gently – focus on any existing corns or. Once you complete the procedure for both feet, you can use a home-made foot scrub to further exfoliate. Here’s a recipe that I recommend: DIY body scrub i.e. banana sugar foot scrub

You can exfoliate till your calves and leave it on for about 5 minutes as this also works as a mask.

Rinse this off with lukewarm water.

Moisturize and Massage-

Massage your feet for some more pampering. I love using our natural Shea butter or the Grapefruit & Ylang Ylang Body butter. If you have stubborn cracked heel, you can try this simple remedy to treat it. Wear a pair of socks for a few hours to allow the butter / moisturizer to soak into your skin.

And that’s it!

Easy no?

It’s simple and quick and it will ensure that your feet stay in a good condition for a long time.

How to make your own Natural Sunscreen at Home

I have been meaning to write this blog post for a while as I have received calls from many of you requesting me to make a natural sunscreen. However, I have been unsuccessful in making a stable product with adequate protection. So I’m offering you some simple recipes that you can try yourself.

We can’t deny the benefits of using a sunscreen – It prevents premature ageing, reduces tanning and the chances of skin cancer due to sun exposure. However, the ingredients of most sunscreens are alarming as they often contain endocrine disrupting chemicals or toxic components, which are responsible for numerous health issues.
So, the dilemma is whether to use or not to use sunscreen.

Since there are strong advocates of both sides of the argument, I think the safest bet is to make a simple, natural sunscreen at home.

With a little research and effort, you can easily prepare your own natural sunscreen lotion or cream at your home, ensuring the safest sunscreen product for yourself and your family.

I’m sharing 2 simple DIY recipes to make your own natural sunscreen at home using easy to find ingredients.

Natural Sunscreen Recipe 1

  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons almond oil
  • 2 tablespoons aloe gel
  • 2 tablespoons Vitamin E (puncture a capsule)
  • 4 tablespoons zinc oxide (available at chemists)
  • 30-40 drops carrot seed oil

1.Melt your coconut oil and stir in olive oil, almond oil and vitamin E. Allow it to cool for some time and add carrot seed oil.
2.Refrigerate the mixture so that it hardens slightly. Now add aloe gel and zinc oxide and blend it well using a hand blender.
3.Transfer to a clean bowl. Keep the sunscreen refrigerated so that it stays solid.

Natural Sunscreen Recipe 2

  • 1/2 cup almond
  • ½ cup shea butter
  • ¼ cup coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoon zinc oxide
  • 1 teaspoon carrot seed oil
  • 1 teaspoon of red raspberry seed oil
  • ¼ cup grated bees wax
  • 10-20 drops Lavender essential oil

1.Warm beeswax on low heat or a double boiler till it melts.
2.Melt in coconut oil and shea butter
3.Allow the mixture to reach room temperature
4.Stir in almond oil, carrot seed oil, red raspberry seed oil, zinc oxide and lavender essential oil.
5.Transfer to a clean glass jar and store in the fridge if required

Since this recipe has shea butter and oils, it may not suit people with oily/acne prone skin.

Since these recipes do not contain any preservatives, it would be a good idea to make small batches and use it up in a week. These recipes may not be suitable for oily / acne prone skin as we use coconut oil, shea butter which are on heavy on the face.

There are a few other things to keep in mind if you make your own sunscreen. Most DIY sunscreens may not offer protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Also, there is no method to judge the SPF of your sunscreen. So I recommend using a DIY sunscreen only during light sun exposure and reapplying it frequently.

I am a strong advocate of soaking up some early morning sun and generally go without a sunblock during that time but wear a medicated sunscreen (not natural at all) if stepping out.

What are your sunscreen stories?? Have you ever tried making your own natural sunscreen at home? I would love to hear about your experience.

7 Benefits of Coconut Oil you don’t know about

We know it’s utility is far beyond the kitchen regime, it has countless health benefits and is one of the best ingredients for a skin nourishing massage. In fact, whether you opt to massage on your own or schedule an appointment with a massage therapist, you will find that coconut oil is the best massage oil – for body and hair.

So what makes coconut oil so beneficial? ( for the geeky ones)
The answer is that Coconut oil or copra oil is extracted from matured coconut kernel. This oil comes with approximately 92-percentage saturated fat with medium-chained triglycerides. So the secret lies here!

Let’s check the major benefits of Coconut Oil:

1.It has anti-microbial properties

Coconut Oil comes with anti-microbial properties. You can apply coconut oil over your skin to get rid of rashes or treat issues like nail fungus. We also recommend using coconut oil to make this amazing diaper cream for babies.

2.Super skin food

Coconut oil has huge doses of Vitamin E, which helps in nourishing the skin and thereby, making it soft and smooth. If you compare various commercial body creams and moisturizers to coconut oil, you will that the percentage of Vitamin E in our copra oil is far higher. Which brings me to the question – why you should use artificial products, when you get far better benefits from this natural oil?

Ageing leads to loss of softness, flexibility and colour to our skin. However, this miracle oil can help us look young.. In addition to vitamins, it has great anti-oxidant effect and helps delay signs of age spots and wrinkles.

4.Hydrates skin

Coconut oil is easily absorbed by the skin and hydrates it – you can use coconut oil as it is without even mixing anything in it.

5.Protects from Sunburn

Coconut oil provides protection from solar radiation and sunburn as it has a SPF 4. Moreover, if you have exposed to sunlight without any protection, you should immediately apply coconut oil afterward to reduce the skin damage as coconut oil has a soothing effect on burnt skin and works perfectly to reduce both pain and inflammation.

6.Reduces the appearance of scars

Coconut oil is great at minimizing the appearance of scars like stretch marks or burns. It also helps lighten chicken pox scars.

7.Great for oral detoxification

You can detox your mouth using coconut oil by swishing it in the mouth for 15-20 minutes on an empty stomach, and then discarding it. It is believed to pull out the germs and toxins along with the saliva. It prevents yellowing of teeth and bad breath.

Hope you find these tips useful and implement them in your daily health care regime.
