5 Ways To Indulge In Meaningful Self Care

It’s Delightful December, and there would be nothing more delightful (for us) than knowing that you are taking out some time to indulge in some serious self-care. I say serious because it is something that we all should take seriously.  How would you like the idea of an unconventional long weekend where you don’t splurge money by adding more things that you don’t need. A weekend where which is truly fulfilling. Maybe all you need is to complete the eight hours of sleep that you’ve been rescheduling for weeks. If you’re looking for more ways to enjoy your own space and indulge in self-care then this one is meant for you! They’re extremely simple techniques that to fill yourself with some burst of happyness.

Have you been living in a messy space? Do you wish to get back from wild to civilisation? Because there is nothing more satisfying to your soul than knowing that the wrapper you’ve hidden under your bed is finally gone. We all remember those times when we threw unwanted things in our cupboards just because we were too lazy to deal with it. Start with the wardrobe, it may be painful but arrange all the displacement. Swipe everything to get away from the dust. Use an old toothbrush for smaller spaces. Donate the clothes you don’t wear anymore. Detox. Give it your all.

Decluttering doesn’t just mean cleaning up dirt, but it means to take a deep breath to clear one’s head. Think about things that you left for some other time. Plan your entire week’s diet. What are the tasks do you want to get done with. What are some things that you need to change right now? It could be anything, maybe an addiction, maybe a toxic relationship. It could be as simple as a box of tissues that you had to buy but you always forget. Figure it out. Keep a pen and paper with you.

Where does even self-care stand without preparing to eat something you absolutely love. There is a different rush in spending the time to cook your dream dinner. And the best part is absolutely customized. If you like to have pineapple on pizza without cheese but extra black olives, you can do it and no one can stop you. It is empowering to cook. It could be something that you don’t know but then you get to learn a new recipe.

You might not even know how to cook, which is great because there is always a first to everything. Imagine eating the perfect beverage, the perfect meal, and the perfect dessert all exactly made just how you like it.

Don’t want to go out and spend a bomb of facials/cleansing and massages. Spend a day and do it all. Start with releasing tension in your skin by massaging your own points with light pressure and light strokes. Apply pressure gradually and gently. The scalp, the neck, foot rubs. Use oils suited such as Sweet Almond, Coconut or Jojoba. Exfoliate your skin using scrubs. Cleansing is an important step. You can refer to our blogs on how to make your own cleansers, face masks etc. Follow cleansing with hydration. The moisture is indispensable. Apply lotion, face cream and lip balm regularly to work towards a healthier skin. You can mark small things to add to your everyday beauty routine. Consistent nourishment is the key to happy skin.

You know what feels great after a long hectic week? Soaking your entire body in a warm water. Women especially have a little higher temperature needs than men. There is no arguing that if you take a warm water bath it loosens stiffened muscles and helps in healing muscle pain.

To extract maximum benefits of a hot water bath, consider adding some Epsom sea salt in it for a spa-like experience. This is a great way for weekend relaxing, but please consider your skin sensitivity and physician to check to avoid any negative triggers for your skin. Avoid hot water baths if you have an especially dry skin.

If you don’t have a bathtub or have a dry skin you can still imagine an evening where you can just soak your feet in hot salt water (not too hot and not too warm) while you read your favourite novel. While you’re at this, you can provide your hair turban therapy.

Oil your head, massage it well into your scalp and let it sit for three-four hours. Then prepare a warm towel by simply soaking it in hot water, and then wring away excess water. Wrap this around your head while you dip your feet into the hot water solution. This is so soothing that you can call it like a ‘therapy blast’.

Do you remember how you would kill for new drawing books and colours as a child? Try dedicating a weekend to just throwing colours on paper or canvas or clothes. Take out that time that you were otherwise going to spend on social media, immersing in self-hatred by looking in the mirror. Self-care is about enjoying time with your own ideas and thoughts. Make your own caricature. Start with the most basic mountain and sun scenery. Doodle if your head is clumsy. Paint a wall. Reinvent the room’s arrangement and change the settings. Mix random paint colours and make no sense. But do it, simply for the sake of it.

What we are trying to say is – feel free to spend time with yourself without fearing missing out on other plans. That is really the beauty of self-care. If you try any of these, then do comment below and let us know how it turned out for you. Until the next time, keep following us at Burst of Happyness!

They’re sweeter and like so much better also make sure to use a darker coloured one. To create this you would have to mix 1 tablespoon maple syrup and 1 tablespoon olive oil (or sweet almond oil), ¾ tablespoon coconut oil in a container. Add ½ spoon of Soy lecithin or Sunflower lecithin which is important to emulsify the maple syrup. Heat it in a double boiler using not a lot of water, like an inch deep would do. After completely blending the maple syrup cool it for 5-7 minutes and put it in any travel-friendly case.

  1. DIY  Tint of Pink Lip Balm

Carnauba wax or Soy wax
Coconut oil
Hibiscus powder

This process is very basic and easy. All you need to do is heat 1 tablespoon of Carnauba wax or Soy wax in either a double boiler or you can melt it over another candle flame too. The point is to  melt it. When it gets heated put it in a clear container, otherwise you can also use a plastic bag. Wherever you put your melted wax, merge 1 tablespoon of coconut oil in it. To fuse the balm with a natural pink tint to give yourself a fresh look, add 1-2 teaspoons of hibiscus powder/ If you’re using the plastic bag then use your fingers from outside to blend the mix. If you’re using a container, stir the ingredients well. Once you have arrived at the perfect consistency just pour it into the container of your choice. You can use containers of old balms, or lipsticks that you don’t use anymore as well.

  1. DIY Cocoa Butter Balm

Why you should try this? Because it tastes and smells like chocolate! Not to mention soy wax is a great protective layer to keep the skin hydrated and healthy. So this is a saver recipe to soften your lips and retain their natural glow. To begin, you would need a heat-resistant container where you put 1 tablespoon of grated wax. Heat this bowl over a double boiler until beeswax completely melts. To enrich the contents, combine 1 tablespoon of cocoa butter and 1-2 teaspoons of beetroot/ hibiscus powder (whatever works for you). Keep stirring and to make this extra nourishing, and finally add 1 tablespoon of coconut oil. Benefits Of Onion For Hair

Onions are a powerful root vegetable. We’re all accustomed to eating onions in Indian cooking whether in curries, biryani or chaat, but did you know that onions could be used in juice form to enrich your hair? It’s one of the most natural and organic ways to treat your luscious locks so they retain their luster and shine.

You’ll be crying happy tears when we take you through all the wonderful benefits of Onions, and not just because you’ll be chopping them. They are Rich in antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, and their usage truly helps keeps hair loss at bay.

Here are some benefits of Onions for hair:

They are very good at hair follicle nourishment and help restore lost nutrients to your scalp. Stronger follicles mean stronger hair, which means your hair will be able to sustain all those intricate braids and styles you’ll inevitably do to have a fierce and fun look.

Sulphur Richness

They are rich in Sulphur, which is known to minimize breakage and thinning. We’ve all experienced that painful moment of brushing your hair only to find so much of it, stuck on the brush, especially if you’ve had a busy week. Sulphur helps to strengthen the actual strands so as to keep them healthy and robust. By the time you’re done with the onion mask for your hair, the only thing breaking will be the hearts of your several admirers.

Reduce Hair Loss

They have potent anti-bacterial properties and help fight infections of the scalp. This, in turn, helps reduce hair fall as scalp infections can cause massive loss of hair. The sun, the dust and sweat can pose some serious problems for the scalp, and in our busy lives, we don’t always have the time to give our hair the TLC it needs. Dandruff is so common, and onion juice can help prevent and fight these scalp problems, making sure that the scalp and follicles have ample nutrition.

Less Grey More Happyness

They are naturally potent antioxidants, which is why they help reverse the effects of premature greying. We’ve all been there, one morning all of a sudden we find a grey stray hair and start panicking about ageing. Well, it’s a completely natural thing to occur. But worry not, onions got your back. Greying is often times related to other external factors like environment and stress, so using onions can be both a preventative measure and help with reversing the greying process.

Shine and Volume

This vegetable lends a healthy shine to hair, which can become permanent when used regularly. No matter how you like to style your hair, it’s always good to have a little bounce and volume to your hair, whether short or long, curly or straight. Onions help give your hair that classic shine, that we always see in shampoo ads. And it helps that your Instagram post against the sun with a lens flare makes your hair look salon ready.

Research has found that they have the ability to prevent neck and head cancer. Often times in the modern age, we tend to ignore nature’s bountiful resources and this is just one of them.

No Lice

They also make your hair uninhabitable for lice. Would you go out in close quarters with other people after you’ve had onions for lunch? Turns out lice don’t like it either! They say ‘prevention is better than cure’ and it could not be truer in this case. Lice are annoying little beings that take ages to get rid of, so making your hair uninhabitable for lice is a good way to go.

More Volume

Add volume by using onion juice for hair. Voluminous curls and blowouts are the perfect addition to a weekend look and with just a few washes, that’s possible! It’s also better to naturally add volume to your hair than subject it to all that heat and chemicals that inevitably are used in salon blowouts.

They can be used to fight dandruff owing to their rich antibacterial properties. Dandruff affects more than just your scalp, it has a bad habit of getting everywhere and can make for an embarrassing day at the office if it gets on your clothes. Onions are a sure fire way to fend off dandruff.

Improve Blood Circulation

They improve blood circulation which is another way they contribute to hair growth. Hair, at the end of the day, is still a part of your biology, so if your system is healthy, then your hair follows suit. Increased blood circulation means that your hair grows faster and stronger so you can show it off any way you choose!

We hope these help, after all, we just want all of your days to be ‘happy hair days!’

A little more about Antiperspirants

Deodorants and antiperspirants have become absolute essentials in the 21st-century hygiene routines. Antiperspirants are a multi million dollar industry that function as essential beauty products, or even a simple gift for friends and family. But how safe are these products really? So many people complain about irritation when applied directly on the skin, not to mention rashes and irritations especially if your skin is sensitive; and the risk of some dangerous diseases!

Well, the human body HAS to perspire. The sweat glands are merely doing their job. Sweating, or the production of fluid by various glands over your body’s surface, helps cool you down, keeping your internal body temperature consistent. Your armpits not only produce sweat in response to increased body temperature, but they also have glands that make fluid when you feel stressed. That sweat, when it sits in the warm, dark atmosphere of your armpits, allows odor-producing bacteria to flourish.

And what do you do to cope with the odour? You use deodorants and antiperspirants that eliminate the odour and make the armpits and yourself smell fresh and fragrant. No one’s expecting anyone to do nothing to deal with the odour, but have you really thought whether what you’re doing is the right thing or not? Are the deodorants and antiperspirants really just solving the *problem* or are they creating more *problems* and *risks* for you to tackle? The answer to the previous question is a big YES!

Most commercially available deodorants are chemical based which blocks pores to prevent sweating. This causes a toxic build up in sweat glands and lymph nodes. In the long run, chemical deodorants may cause cancer and Alzheimer’s. They could be responsible for respiratory allergies for some people too. Truth be told, there can be some negative health consequences associated with regular antiperspirant use. Here are some of the chemicals used in antiperspirants that might be harmful:

Aluminium is a natural metal that’s mixed with most other minerals to create alloys. But it’s a heavy element which means it could have negative repercussions when in contact with skin. More research is needed in this area, but many scientists believe that the aluminium in antiperspirants, used to keep sweat from exiting the body, could be linked to the development of breast cancer and Alzheimer’s.

Estrogen function in the body may be affected if multiple body care products containing parabens are used at once

These chemicals help the products they are in stick to the skin. They may interfere with reproductive health in men and women.

This chemical kills bacteria, and it’s used in many products. Research is increasingly showing that triclosan can interfere with hormone activity and gut bacteria health. In fact, the FDA in the United States has recently banned triclosan in soaps and hand washes. The ban does not extend to other products like deodorant.

There is growing scientific awareness about the human microbiota: the mass of bacteria and fungi that live on our skin, as well as in our saliva and guts, play a vital role in maintaining good health. The fuss about antiperspirants is just that they interfere with the natural process and they’re more harmful than you think they are. Please use your beauty products carefully and safely. Take responsibility for your health and do the right thing. You cannot be ignorant in today’s day and time and have yourself exposed to products that could be harmful. Switch to products that have fewer chemicals and less adverse effects on your health. Choose your happyness!

Haldi Hacks for Skincare and Diet

Indian cooking has always been associated with its perfect blend of spices. Amongst these is Turmeric, also lovingly known as Haldi. Turmeric is what gives Indian food that beautiful yellow colour and it’s one of the most nutritious spices in the world. A cherished cousin of ginger, turmeric is a root that accounts for an excess of uses in our kitchens and lives. Bright orange-yellow in colour with a heady fragrance, turmeric has a unique earthy taste, with a touch of citrusy bitterness and the numbing punch of pepper. Its incredible list of healing properties includes antioxidant, antiviral, antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-carcinogenic, anti-mutagenic and anti-inflammatory which makes it an essential ingredient and the reason your Naani insists on adding it to everything.
Indian kitchens have already discovered countless uses for turmeric in their dishes. ts usage has been long embedded in the ancient Ayurvedic practice and has been cited to promote the holistic health of the body – this has resulted in increased usage of it in the Western world too. Considering the number of health benefits it has to offer, this powerful spice can be added to a variety of dishes in order to keep improving the quality of our lives. Add turmeric powder to curries, smoothies, warm milk, salads, stir-fried dishes and in just about any other way you feel like. While there are turmeric supplements also available, raw turmeric is considered to be the most effective. Here are some benefits of using Haldi in your cooking.

Relief from Arthritic Pain

Turmeric’s anti-inflammatory properties have been instrumental in treating osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. The antioxidant also destroys the free radicals in the body that damage the cells. Anybody suffering from the condition should consume the spice on a daily basis to relieve themselves of mild joint pains and inflammation, though it should be understood that it does not stand as a substitute for medication.

Improves Digestion

When consumed raw while suffering from a digestive problem, turmeric can help treat the condition. The major components of the spice stimulate the gallbladder to produce bile, instantly making the digestive system more efficient. It is also known to reduce symptoms of bloating and gas.

Boosts Immunity

Lipopolysaccharide – a substance in turmeric with anti-bacterial, antiviral and anti-fungal agents helps stimulate the human immune system. Take a teaspoon of the spice powder in a glass of warm milk daily and you’ll see it work wonders as it reduces your chances of catching flu.

Healing Properties

Turmeric is every mother’s pet suggestion to treat any cut, burn or infection. Its natural antiseptic and anti-bacterial properties make it an effective disinfectant. The powder can be sprinkled on the affected area to help it heal faster. Instead of turning to a pill, the next time you experience an upset stomach or heartburn, try this super spice instead.
Turmeric can be consumed in either food or used in skin care because of its long list of positive attributes. Now, we know you’ve been to countless Haldi ceremonies where brides and bridegrooms are doused in Milk and Haldi to make them glow on their happy day. But haldi can be so much more!
Here’s how to incorporate Haldi in your skin care for that beautiful supple glow:
Turmeric Face Mask
Heat up a teaspoon of raw honey in the microwave for 10 to 15 seconds.
In a dish, combine the honey with a teaspoon of turmeric and a teaspoon of milk or yoghurt.
Wash your face, pull your hair back, and apply the mask to your face using your fingers or a spoon. If you don’t want your fingers stained yellow, wear gloves when applying the mask.
Relax for 20 to 30 minutes as you let the mask dry and harden.
Rinse the mask off with warm water, moving your fingers in tiny circles to take advantage of turmeric’s exfoliating ability.
This turmeric mask will help clear and smooth your skin, minimize the appearance of pores, and make your skin appear fuller and plumper. If the turmeric stains your face, simply wipe it off with a facial toner.

Turmeric Potion

For all the Harry Potter fans, here’s an easy-to-make concoction that will make you happy and healthy.
Boil two cups of water.
Add half a teaspoon of ground turmeric.
Stir, and then cover.
Simmer for 10 minutes.
Filter through a tea strainer.
Sip and enjoy.
You can drink this cold or hot. Add a sweetener such as honey, or drop a piece of ginger root into your mug to punch up the taste.
The next time your Naani asks you what you’re up to, tell her, her advice is the reason you have glowing skin!

Mash up the banana well and add the yoghurt, olive oil, and honey into a bowl along with banana. Mix it all well until you get a nicely blended mixture. Rinse the hair after that. What will you do in that half hour? Well, don’t forget to dunk the leftover bananas in Nutella for the perfect snack. We won’t tell if you won’t.

Egg yolks are so rich and concentrated in protein that they enrich the hair follicles directly at the root making them lush. Plus, there’s always a little Johnson and Johnson’s baby oil lying around an Indian household regardless of whether there are actual babies around. Here’s what you will need for this one:

With the remaining egg white that you’re left with, make the best little egg white scrambled egg on toast and enjoy it guilt-free as a healthy snack while you wait.
We hope you find these DIY conditioners helpful! It’s the perfect way to take care of yourself, get some ‘me-time’ and your hair will be happier and healthier for it.

Yoga for the perfect face!

Yoga is the age-old discipline has been the buzzword for a healthier lifestyle for quite some time now. But did you know you could also exercise your facial muscles through Yoga? The muscles of the face are no different from the muscles of the rest of the body. If you don’t exercise the muscles below the neck, they become weak and flabby, and the same thing will happen to your face with age. Facial Yoga is a completely natural way of making your face look younger by toning the muscles. So if you’re conscious about your double chin, chubby cheeks or wrinkles, you can take matters into your own hands! Here are some facial yoga exercises to make you look youthfully healthy.

Puff up the cheeks

Puff out both of your cheeks and shift the air in your mouth from one cheek to the other, 5 times. Then release air while making a small “O”. Repeat the exercise three-four times to keep your cheeks firm. Did you involuntarily do this action while reading it? Well, we’re glad we’ve got you started on your facial yoga journey! Incidentally, it’s a fun way to play with your dog around the house, but we must warn you, your cat will not be amused by these silly things.

Stick your tongue out

As silly as this sound, do your best impression of a lion and stick your tongue out. No, really! Trust us, this is a great exercise to tone the cheek muscles making them look firm for that perfect contour face. Repeat 3 times for full effect. We hear babies are better than adults at this exercise but here’s your chance to give them a run for their money and bring your inner child out!

Look Up at The Ceiling

This next one is particularly engaging. Think of your favourite tall, dark and handsome celebrity and look up and pucker your mouth like you’re about to kiss them. Hold for 5 seconds, and repeat 5 times. For a more prominent jawline and high cheekbones, you can also stick out your tongue while looking up at the ceiling in order to stretch and strengthen the muscles in your neck. Return to a neutral position to continue the exercise every time. Your significant other is sure to thank you for this!

Fish Face

Give the Instagram pout and duck face a rest and take a step further by making your mouth like a fish. Smile while pursuing your lips, then create a fish face by sucking the inside of your cheeks into the gap between the sides of your teeth. Perform this exercise five times to firm and tone your lips and cheeks. Actually, while you’re at it, this is perfect for an impromptu boomerang on IG to share with your friends.

Bye Bye Crow’s Feet

This exercise works wonders to decrease unwanted lines around your eyes, also known as crow’s feet. Open your eyes wide, as if startled or scared. Pull your skin back while doing this exercise with the help of your hands, you’ve seen this before! It’s what all mothers do when you tell them you’re coming home late and they all go, “Hey Bhagwan!”

As simple as this sounds, it’s the most effective way to tone your jawline. Drop your jaw to open your mouth, and make a small “O” with your lips. While keeping your jaw dropped, widen your lips like you’re going to smile. Keep repeating small “O” big “O” about 10 times. This is a great exercise to do while watching your favourite guilty pleasure reality show and your exercise will coincide with all the cliffhangers.

We hope you do these exercises and embrace facial yoga because we guarantee that your selfie game will be amazing!

It’s all about loving yourself!

It is not easy. Especially for us, women. We’ve been told that we’re not enough. We’ve been told that we’re not perfect. We’ve been conditioned to put everything else before us. Life can be challenging and when a rough patch hits you, you start being unfair to yourself, let alone loving yourself.

Getting love from others is imperative, but loving ourselves first should be our top-most priority. Ladies, we need to hold our head and spirit high and keep loving ourselves in the good, the bad, and the ugly – come what may, because nobody else is going to do it for us. Some of us have been there and some of us are going through it. It might seem awkward because we haven’t been taught to do that, but it’s so darn easy! Here’s how you can begin with it…

Tell yourself what you love about yourself

Well, if you don’t know what you love about yourself, then that’s exactly where you begin from. You cannot not have any goodness in you. Take a pen and paper or type away on your phone, and note down all the good things that you love about yourself, and tell yourself that every single day. “I like that you are so dedicated to your job!” “I like how you smell in the mornings!” “You make good desserts!” Say these things to yourself every day and remind yourself how awesome you are!

Stop pleasing others

We all go through a phase where we do things to please those around us. We behave in a particular manner so that our friends and family like us more – even though we’re not comfortable. Stop doing that already! You’re not a jar of Nutella or mac n cheese that you’re going to please everyone. Accept that and align yourself with your cores and values. Lead a burden-free life.

Accept your flaws

Don’t shy away from them. Look them in the eye and accept them. Embrace your flaws and move ahead with them. Work on them so that they don’t hamper your well-being and growth. Don’t let anyone put you down for having flaws! Nobody is perfect you nobody needs to be. Get real, girl!

Take a break

Make it a habit to take breaks at regular intervals. Or, chuck that! You’re even allowed to take an impromptu break if you feel like you cannot deal with shit anymore (just inform the people who would be affected by it). Breaks are necessary. They give you the chance to breathe, unwind, retrospect, and rejuvenate. You do not get to feel guilty for taking them. You deserve them. Go for it!

Forgive yourself

The past is not going to change. The past is there so that you can learn from it and create a better future. You’re only going to make it tough for yourself if you beat yourself up for the things that you did. Accept it gracefully. It’s life and sometimes the shit hits the roof. Learn from your mistakes and move on. If you can, make amends, but don’t beat yourself up for things that are not going to chance.

Reduce your expectations

This one is again a toughie! We’re human beings, after all, and how can we not expect anything at all? I understand. But work on this step by step. Maintain a diary and note down the things that you are going to stop expecting from others. Once you achieve that, make more notes and tick those things off too. By not expecting anything, I don’t mean you don’t expect people to treat you respectfully. It means you work on the things that you expect people to do for you. Trust me, your life will be easier and happier!

Pick up a self-care practice

Take care of your mind. Take care of your mind. Take care of your soul. Set a self-care routine and follow it religiously. You could pick up a skin/hair care practice or a spiritual practice, or it could be a mix of both; like, giving yourself a head massage twice a week and doing yoga thrice a week. Nothing makes yourself feel better than taking care of yourself and you owe it to yourself.

Pick up a happyness practice

Well, self-care could mean happyness, but a happyness practice could be different from a self-care practice. It could be dancing, or cooking, or going for a drive, or talking to your mother every day – just anything that will give you happyness. Do this at least four times a week and you’ll realize what a mood enhancer this is!

Let Go

The grudges. The expectations. The pain. The clutter. Let them go. Let go of everything that doesn’t serve you well. It is easy to hold on to the not-so-good things and let them eat you up from inside. Exert some willpower and let everything go. It doesn’t have to be done all at once. It’s a process and it will take time, but keep at it!

Be Grateful

Yes, I know. It is easier said than done. But during times when things are tough, this one practice can really keep you going. It could be your healthy body, your cosy blanket, your lovely hair, your pet, the weather, your mother; all of that and so much more. You can start with the little things and you will start becoming grateful for the larger things in life. And as they say, gratitude attracts abundance. Treat life better and life will treat you better!

You, yourself, as much as anybody else in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection! Let this be your mantra. It’s not selfish to love yourself.
